Approach to Teaching

A World Class School Offering the British Curriculum

Play-Based Curriculum

At DBF, we proudly embrace a play-based curriculum, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment. We believe that education should be a collaborative journey where children are active participants, exploring their interests and curiosities. Our approach is not top-down; instead, we encourage children to take the lead in their learning experiences.

As Dr. Karyn Purvis highlights, “scientists have discovered that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain unless it is done in play, in which case it only takes 10 to 20 repetitions.” This insight underscores the power of play in accelerating learning.

Educational philosophy

Our educational philosophy is informed by a blend of esteemed methodologies, including Reggio Emilia, Montessori, forest school, and the curiosity approach. By integrating these diverse approaches, we create a rich and varied educational experience that honors each child’s unique strengths and interests. Our commitment to a play-based curriculum ensures that learning is joyful, meaningful, and deeply rooted in the natural curiosity and wonder of childhood.

Interest based approach

Our interest-based approach to planning ensures that children’s individual interests, next steps, and opportunities for consolidation are always addressed. By weaving the characteristics of effective learning throughout our curriculum, we create a responsive and engaging educational environment. This approach allows us to tailor learning experiences to each child’s unique passions and needs, fostering deeper understanding and sustained enthusiasm for learning.

Process over product

At DBF, we prioritize the process over the product in our approach to learning. This means that we value the journey of exploration and discovery, where young learners engage in activities that emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and engagement. Rather than focusing solely on the end result, we encourage students to invest time and effort in the process of learning. Adults at DBF play a crucial role in scaffolding children through this process, providing guidance and support while helping them understand the importance of valuing the journey and the skills gained along the way over the final outcome.
